This Spooky Caramel Apple Sangria is a sweet, boozy Halloween party punch that tastes like a caramel apple and looks like a haunted potion. Quick and easy to make with simple ingredients, it’s the perfect centerpiece for any spooky gathering.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 bottle (750 ml) dry white wine (Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc)
  • 2 cups apple cider (unfiltered preferred)
  • 1/2 cup caramel sauce (homemade or store-bought, like Ghirardelli or Torani)
  • 1/4 cup apple brandy or Calvados (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 2 medium apples (Honeycrisp or Fuji)
  • 1 large orange (blood orange for extra creepy color)
  • 1 cup seedless green grapes (frozen)
  • 1/2 cup pomegranate arils
  • 1/4 cup caramel sauce (for rimming glasses)
  • 1/4 cup black sanding sugar or crushed black cookies (for rim)
  • Fresh rosemary sprigs (for garnish)
  • Ice cubes (or frozen apple cider cubes, optional)

Instructions

  1. Make the caramel syrup: In a small saucepan over medium-low heat, warm 1/2 cup of caramel sauce until thin and pourable. Do not boil. Set aside to cool slightly.
  2. Prep the spooky fruit: Core the apples and slice into thin rounds or small wedges (about 1/4 inch thick). Toss with lemon juice to prevent browning. Slice the orange into thin rounds, then cut each round into quarters. Leave grapes whole (frozen preferred).
  3. Build the base: In a large pitcher or punch bowl, combine white wine, apple cider, and optional apple brandy. Stir gently. Pour in warm caramel sauce and stir until fully incorporated.
  4. Add the fruit: Drop in apple slices, orange pieces, frozen grapes, and pomegranate arils. Stir gently to distribute.
  5. Chill and let flavors meld: Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, preferably 2-4 hours. Can be made the night before (add fruit a few hours before serving).
  6. Prepare the spooky glass rims: Just before serving, pour a thin layer of extra caramel sauce onto a small shallow dish. On a separate plate, spread black sanding sugar or crushed cookies. Dip each glass rim first into caramel, then into sugar, twisting gently to coat evenly. Let set for 1-2 minutes.
  7. Serve with flair: Fill each prepared glass with ice cubes (or frozen apple cider cubes). Ladle or pour sangria over ice, ensuring each glass gets a good mix of fruit. Garnish with a fresh rosemary sprig. Serve immediately.

Notes

Don’t skip the lemon juice to prevent apple browning. The caramel rim is non-negotiable for presentation. Frozen grapes keep the sangria cold without dilution and look like eyeballs. Use a dry white wine to balance sweetness. Let sangria rest 2-4 hours for best flavor, but don’t let fruit sit overnight. For a non-alcoholic version, replace wine with sparkling apple cider or ginger ale and skip brandy. Leftover sangria can be stored in the fridge for up to 2 days; strain fruit if keeping longer. Leftover sangria can be gently heated with a cinnamon stick for a hot caramel apple cider cocktail.
