This Spooky Blackberry Orange Sangria is the perfect Halloween party drink with a deep purple color, sweet and tart flavors, and a hint of warm spices. It’s incredibly easy to make and gets even better after resting overnight.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 bottle (750 ml) dry red wine (Spanish Tempranillo or medium-bodied Merlot recommended)
  • 1/2 cup brandy
  • 1/4 cup orange liqueur (triple sec or Cointreau)
  • 2 cups blackberry juice or blackberry nectar
  • 2 cups fresh or frozen blackberries
  • 2 large oranges (one for juicing, one for slicing)
  • 1 lemon (thinly sliced)
  • 1 apple (Honeycrisp or Granny Smith, cut into thin wedges)
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 23 star anise pods
  • 12 tablespoons honey or simple syrup (optional, to taste)
  • Ice cubes or frozen blackberries for serving
  • Sparkling water or ginger ale for topping off each glass

Instructions

  1. Prep the fruit: Wash all fruit thoroughly. Slice one orange into thin wheels (about 1/4 inch thick). Juice the other orange into a small bowl. Slice the lemon into thin rounds. Cut the apple into thin wedges, removing the core and seeds. If using fresh blackberries, pick through and discard any that are moldy.
  2. Build the flavor base: In a large pitcher, combine the blackberry juice, brandy, orange liqueur, and fresh orange juice. Stir gently with a wooden spoon.
  3. Add the wine and spices: Pour in the entire bottle of red wine. Drop in the cinnamon stick and star anise pods. Stir gently to combine.
  4. Add the fruit: Gently add the orange wheels, lemon slices, apple wedges, and blackberries. Use a spoon to push them down so they are submerged in the liquid.
  5. Taste and adjust: Take a small sip. If it needs sweetness, stir in honey or simple syrup one tablespoon at a time. Remember that flavors will meld as it rests.
  6. Chill and rest: Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, ideally overnight. The flavors develop and deepen over time.
  7. Serve with sparkle: Fill each glass about 3/4 full with the sangria mixture. Top off with a splash of sparkling water or ginger ale. Add ice cubes or frozen blackberries. Garnish with an orange wheel and a cinnamon stick if desired.

Notes

For best results, let the sangria rest overnight. Use frozen blackberries instead of ice cubes to keep the drink cold without diluting it. If making a double batch, prepare two separate pitchers rather than scaling up one to maintain proper fruit-to-liquid ratio. Remove fruit after 24 hours if storing longer than 2 days to prevent it from breaking down.
