These quick caramel apple dumplings with Mountain Dew are a fast, easy dessert that tastes like a county fair. The citrus in the soda creates a magical caramelized sauce while the crescent roll dough puffs up into golden, gooey perfection.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 medium apples (Granny Smith recommended)
  • 1 can (8 oz) refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup Mountain Dew (regular, not diet)
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons salted butter, cut into small pieces
  • Vanilla ice cream (for serving, optional)
  • Caramel sauce (for serving, optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Peel, core, and cut apples into 8 wedges each (about 1/2 inch thick at the widest part).
  3. In a small bowl, mix together granulated sugar and cinnamon.
  4. Open crescent roll dough and separate into 8 triangles along perforated lines.
  5. Dip each apple wedge into the cinnamon sugar mixture, coating all sides. Place at the wide end of a crescent triangle, roll up, tucking in sides. Place seam-side down in the prepared dish. Repeat for all 8 dumplings.
  6. Pour melted unsalted butter evenly over the dumplings.
  7. Sprinkle remaining cinnamon sugar over the buttered dumplings.
  8. Carefully pour Mountain Dew around the edges of the dish (not directly on top) so it pools around the dumplings.
  9. Dot the tops with the 2 tablespoons of salted butter pieces.
  10. Bake for 28-32 minutes, until golden brown and sauce is bubbly. If tops brown too fast, tent with foil for last 5 minutes.
  11. Let cool in the dish for 5 minutes before serving. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce if desired.

Notes

Don’t use diet Mountain Dew; regular is essential for proper caramelization. Let dumplings rest 5 minutes after baking for sauce to thicken. For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free crescent roll dough. For dairy-free, use vegan butter. Can assemble up to 24 hours ahead and refrigerate unbaked; add 5 minutes to bake time.
