A simple and effective elderberry syrup made with dried elderberries, fresh ginger, and cinnamon sticks, perfect for immune support and seasonal wellness.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup dried elderberries (about 100g)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh ginger root, peeled and sliced thin
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • ½ to ¾ cup raw honey (120180 ml)
  • 4 cups water (950 ml)
  • Optional: pinch of ground cloves or a splash of fresh lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Measure and prep ingredients: 1 cup dried elderberries, 2 tablespoons sliced fresh ginger, 2 cinnamon sticks, and 4 cups water. (5 minutes)
  2. Combine elderberries, ginger, cinnamon sticks, and water in a medium saucepan. Stir gently. (1 minute)
  3. Bring mixture to a rolling boil over medium-high heat. (7–8 minutes)
  4. Reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for 45 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. Remove from heat and strain the syrup through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a heatproof bowl. Press solids to extract syrup. Discard solids. (5 minutes)
  6. While syrup is warm (not boiling hot), stir in ½ to ¾ cup raw honey until dissolved. Adjust sweetness to taste. (3 minutes)
  7. Let syrup cool to room temperature, then transfer to a glass jar or bottle with a tight-fitting lid. Store in refrigerator for up to 3 weeks. (15 minutes)

Notes

Do not add honey while syrup is boiling hot to preserve enzymes. For thicker syrup, simmer longer but watch carefully to avoid burning. Fresh ginger preferred over powdered for better flavor. Strain thoroughly to remove elderberry seeds. Store refrigerated up to 3 weeks or freeze in small portions.
