A quick and easy Halloween appetizer using a store-bought veggie tray transformed into a spooky spider web. Perfect for last-minute parties, this crowd-pleaser comes together in under 15 minutes and is always a hit with kids and adults alike.

Ingredients

  • Store-bought veggie tray (about 2-3 pounds)
  • Ranch dip or hummus (1 cup)
  • Black olives (1 can, sliced)
  • Pretzel sticks (about 8-10)
  • Red bell pepper (1 medium)
  • Fresh parsley or dill (optional, for garnish)
  • Sour cream or plain yogurt (for web pattern)

Instructions

  1. Set up your platter: Place your large serving platter or cutting board on your counter. If using a disposable veggie tray, you can keep the vegetables on the original tray and just place it on the platter.
  2. Arrange the vegetables: If your veggie tray comes pre-arranged, leave it as is. If customizing, empty the tray and arrange the vegetables in a circular pattern around the center, leaving a 5-6 inch circle in the middle for the dip bowl.
  3. Prepare the dip bowl: Place your small bowl or ramekin in the center of the platter. Fill it with ranch dip or hummus, leaving about half an inch of space at the top. Smooth the surface with a spoon.
  4. Create the spider web pattern: Fill a squeeze bottle or zip-top bag with sour cream or plain yogurt. Starting from the center of the dip, squeeze a small circle. Then, working outward, squeeze concentric circles about an inch apart. Use a toothpick or knife tip to drag lines from the center outward through the circles, creating the web effect. Repeat 4-5 times around the circle.
  5. Make the spider: Take 8 pretzel sticks and arrange them around the edge of the dip bowl, sticking out like spider legs. Place a few black olive slices in the center of the pretzel legs to form the spider body. Add two small red bell pepper triangles on top of the olives for eyes.
  6. Add finishing touches: Scatter a few fresh parsley or dill sprigs around the edge of the platter for color. If you have extra black olives, place a few on the vegetable tray for more spider-like accents.
  7. Serve immediately: This is best served fresh. If making ahead, prepare everything except the sour cream web pattern and add that just before serving.

Notes

Keep the dip thick to prevent the sour cream web pattern from bleeding. Chill vegetables for at least 30 minutes before assembling for crunchier texture. For a gluten-free version, swap pretzel sticks for gluten-free pretzels or thin carrot sticks. The web pattern can be made with a spoon and toothpick if no squeeze bottle is available.
