A quick and easy bento box lunch idea with ham, cheese, fruit, and crunchy snacks, perfect for busy mornings. It’s a lifesaver for school lunches, office lunches, or picnics.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 46 slices deli ham (black forest or honey ham)
  • 46 slices or cubes cheddar, Swiss, provolone, or Gouda cheese
  • 1012 crackers (butter crackers, whole wheat, or pretzel crisps)
  • 1 handful baby carrots, cucumber slices, or bell pepper strips
  • 1 small apple (sliced), handful of grapes, or berries
  • Optional: 2-3 dried apricots or cranberries
  • 23 small cornichons or pickle slices
  • 1 small handful almonds, walnuts, or pumpkin seeds
  • Optional: small container mustard, honey mustard, or ranch dressing

Instructions

  1. Prep your ingredients: Wash and dry fruit and vegetables. Slice apple into wedges and toss with lemon juice to prevent browning. Cut cheese into cubes or use cookie cutters for shapes. Slice ham into strips or roll each slice into a tight log.
  2. Arrange the protein: Place ham rolls or strips in one section of the bento box. Next to them, arrange cheese cubes, separating slightly so they don’t stick.
  3. Add the crunch: Fill another compartment with crackers, standing them upright. Add vegetables to a separate section.
  4. Include the sweet: Place fruit in its own compartment. Keep grapes on the stem, berries in a single layer. Dried fruit can go in a small silicone cup.
  5. Finish with extras: Add pickles, nuts, or seeds to remaining spaces. If including dip, pour into a small leakproof container and place in the center or corner.
  6. Check the balance: Ensure a good mix of colors and textures—protein, carb, fruit, and vegetable.
  7. Pack and store: Close lid securely. Add an ice pack if packing for later, or refrigerate. For morning prep, assemble the night before and add crackers in the morning.

Notes

Keep wet ingredients separate from dry to prevent sogginess. Add crackers and nuts in the morning if prepping the night before. Use cookie cutters for fun shapes to make it more appealing for kids. Batch prep ingredients on Sunday for quick assembly during the week.
