A simple, comforting slow cooker apple cider made with just a few ingredients. This recipe uses cloudy apple juice, cinnamon sticks, orange, and warm spices to create a rich, aromatic drink perfect for cold days.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 gallon (3.7 liters) 100% pure cloudy apple juice
  • 4 to 6 whole cinnamon sticks (Cassia preferred)
  • 1 large orange, sliced into rounds
  • 1/2 to 1 cup packed brown sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • 10 whole cloves

Instructions

  1. Rinse the slow cooker to ensure it is clean.
  2. Pour the gallon of apple juice into the slow cooker.
  3. Add the brown sugar and stir gently with a wooden spoon to distribute it evenly.
  4. Wash the orange thoroughly and slice it into thin rounds; toss the slices into the pot.
  5. Add the cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, and freshly grated nutmeg to the pot.
  6. Cover the slow cooker and set it to LOW. Cook for 4 to 6 hours.
  7. About an hour before serving, stir the cider and taste it. Adjust sweetness or tartness if necessary.
  8. Once hot and fragrant, switch the slow cooker to WARM.
  9. Serve in mugs with a cinnamon stick for stirring, or strain out solids if a clearer cider is preferred.

Notes

Avoid boiling the cider, as it drives off aromatic compounds. Use cloudy, unfiltered apple juice for the best flavor and body. If cooking for longer than 6 hours, check the liquid level and add water if necessary to prevent burning. For a clearer cider, strain out the solids before serving. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or frozen for up to 3 months (remove cinnamon sticks before freezing).
