Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion, diced (about 1 cup)
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 pound ground turkey (93% lean)
  • 1 red bell pepper, diced
  • 1 can (14.5 oz) fire-roasted diced tomatoes
  • 1 can (15 oz) kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 can (15 oz) cannellini beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 cup low-sodium chicken broth
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, plus more to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 1/2 cups fresh or frozen cranberries
  • Sour cream or Greek yogurt (for serving, optional)
  • Fresh cilantro, chopped (for serving, optional)
  • Shredded cheddar cheese (for serving, optional)
  • Lime wedges (for serving, optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the diced onion and cook for 4 to 5 minutes until translucent.
  2. Add the minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds, stirring constantly.
  3. Add the ground turkey and cook for 5 to 7 minutes, breaking it up into crumbles, until no longer pink.
  4. Stir in the diced bell pepper and cook for 2 minutes.
  5. Sprinkle chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, cinnamon, salt, and black pepper over the mixture. Stir and cook for 1 minute to bloom the spices.
  6. Pour in the fire-roasted tomatoes (with juices), drained kidney beans, drained cannellini beans, and chicken broth. Stir, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom.
  7. Add the cranberries (fresh or frozen) and stir to combine.
  8. Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15 minutes, stirring once halfway through.
  9. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
  10. Let the chili rest off the heat for 5 minutes before serving. Serve with desired toppings.

Notes

For a thicker chili, mash half of one can of beans before adding. This chili tastes even better the next day. If using frozen cranberries, add them straight to the pot without thawing. For a vegetarian version, swap turkey for two cans of black beans and use vegetable broth.
