This homemade version of the Starbucks favorite is quick, easy, and uses simple ingredients. It’s a cozy, comforting drink that rivals the original and saves you money.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 shots espresso (about 2 ounces each) or 1/2 cup strong brewed coffee
  • 2 tablespoons packed brown sugar (light or dark)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon, plus a pinch for garnish
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Ice cubes
  • 1/2 cup milk of choice (oat milk recommended)

Instructions

  1. Brew your espresso or strong coffee and set aside to cool slightly.
  2. In a cocktail shaker or mason jar, combine the brown sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla extract.
  3. Pour the hot espresso over the brown sugar mixture and stir until the sugar is mostly dissolved.
  4. Add a handful of ice cubes to the shaker (fill about halfway).
  5. Shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds until frothy.
  6. Fill a serving glass with fresh ice.
  7. Pour the shaken espresso over the fresh ice.
  8. Slowly pour the milk over the back of a spoon to create a layered effect.
  9. Stir gently once or twice, garnish with a pinch of cinnamon, and serve immediately.

Notes

For best results, use fresh brown sugar and hot espresso to ensure the sugar dissolves. Shake vigorously to create foam. Use fresh ice for serving to prevent dilution. The vanilla extract is optional but recommended for a more balanced flavor.
