Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (125 g) all-purpose flour, sifted
  • ⅓ cup (35 g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup (113 g) unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
  • ¾ cup (150 g) sugar (granulated or light brown)
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon black food coloring gel
  • ¼ cup (57 g) unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 1 ½ cups (180 g) powdered sugar, sifted
  • 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest, finely grated
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • A pinch of salt (for frosting)
  • Optional: a drop or two orange food coloring gel

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together sifted flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt; set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, combine melted butter and sugar; mix with hand mixer or whisk until glossy, about 2 minutes.
  4. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition, then stir in vanilla extract.
  5. Add black food coloring gel and mix until color is uniform.
  6. Gradually fold in dry ingredients with a spatula until just combined; if too dry, add 1 teaspoon milk.
  7. Scoop tablespoon-sized portions onto baking sheet, spacing about 2 inches apart; wet hands to shape if sticky.
  8. Bake 10–12 minutes until edges are set but centers remain soft; top should be matte and slightly cracked.
  9. Cool cookies on baking sheet 5 minutes, then transfer to wire rack to cool completely.
  10. Prepare frosting: beat softened butter until creamy, gradually add powdered sugar alternating with orange juice, then stir in orange zest, vanilla extract, salt, and optional orange food coloring.
  11. Once cookies are cool, frost using offset spatula or piping bag; add more juice if frosting is too thick.
  12. Let frosting set about 15 minutes before serving.

Notes

Use room temperature eggs for better mixing. Sift dry ingredients to avoid clumps. Mix batter just until combined to keep cookies soft and fudgy. Use gel food coloring for intense black color. Chill dough 30 minutes if cookies spread too much. Frost only when cookies are completely cool to prevent melting. Store cookies in single layers with parchment paper between to keep frosting intact. For gluten-free, substitute all-purpose flour with gluten-free baking flour. For dairy-free, use coconut oil or vegan butter and non-dairy milk. Fresh orange juice and zest provide best flavor; orange extract can be used in a pinch.
