Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cans (14.5 ounces each) canned green beans, drained well
  • 1 can (10.5 ounces) cream of mushroom soup
  • ½ cup (120 ml) milk
  • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) soy sauce
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1½ cups (about 2.8 ounces or 80 grams) French fried onions
  • ½ cup (60 grams) shredded cheddar cheese (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the rack in the middle position.
  2. Drain the green beans. Open both cans and pour the green beans into a colander. Let them drain for a good 2-3 minutes. Then, spread them out on a layer of paper towels and gently pat them dry.
  3. Mix the sauce. In a large mixing bowl, combine the cream of mushroom soup, milk, soy sauce, black pepper, and garlic powder. Stir until smooth and well combined.
  4. Add the green beans. Add the drained and dried green beans to the bowl. Gently fold them into the sauce until every bean is coated.
  5. Layer the casserole. Pour half of the green bean mixture into your greased 8×8-inch baking dish. Spread it into an even layer. Sprinkle ½ cup of the fried onions over this layer. Then, top with the remaining green bean mixture and spread it flat.
  6. Add the topping. Sprinkle the remaining 1 cup of fried onions evenly over the top. If you’re using cheese, scatter the shredded cheddar over the onions.
  7. Bake. Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the casserole is bubbly around the edges and the top is golden brown.
  8. Rest before serving. Let the casserole sit for 5 minutes after removing it from the oven.

Notes

Don’t skip drying the beans—excess moisture is the enemy of crispy edges. Layer fried onions in the middle for crunch in every bite. For a make-ahead option, assemble without topping up to 24 hours in advance and refrigerate; add topping and bake, adding 5-10 minutes. For extra crispy topping, add onions halfway through baking or broil for 1-2 minutes at the end.
