These baked apple dumplings are warm, comforting, and deceptively easy to make. With flaky crescent dough wrapped around tender apples and a rich cinnamon sugar sauce, they’re the perfect dessert for any gathering.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 medium apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji)
  • 1 can (8 ounces) refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease an 8×8-inch baking dish with butter or nonstick spray.
  2. In a small bowl, combine 1/4 cup granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg. Set aside.
  3. Wash and dry apples. Cut each apple in half through the stem, remove core and seeds. Cut each half into two equal wedges (8 wedges total).
  4. Open crescent roll dough and separate into 8 triangles. Gently stretch each piece slightly.
  5. Place one apple wedge at the wide end of each dough triangle. Sprinkle about 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon sugar mixture over the apple, then add a small pat of softened butter (about 1/2 teaspoon). Fold dough over apple, stretching gently to cover completely. Pinch seams to seal. Place seam-side down in prepared dish.
  6. In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine 1/2 cup butter, 1 cup sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg, and 3/4 cup water. Stir constantly until butter melts and sugar dissolves (3-4 minutes). Bring to a gentle simmer, then remove from heat. Stir in vanilla extract and a pinch of salt.
  7. Pour warm cinnamon sugar sauce evenly over dumplings. Sprinkle remaining cinnamon sugar mixture over tops.
  8. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 35-40 minutes, until golden brown and sauce is bubbling thickly. Tent with foil if tops brown too quickly.
  9. Let cool in dish for 5-10 minutes before serving. Serve warm with extra sauce and vanilla ice cream.

Notes

For best results, use Granny Smith apples for tartness. Simmer the sauce until sugar dissolves completely to avoid graininess. Seal dough seams tightly to prevent sogginess. Dumplings taste even better the next day as flavors meld. Can be assembled up to 24 hours ahead and refrigerated.
